The Ambassador

Giuseppe CAVAGNA

Born in Bologna on 8 November 1965. Married, with two daughters.

Graduated in Law from the University of Bologna on 23 May 23 1990.

Between 1992 and 1993, he qualified to practice law and obtained his teaching qualification for upper secondary schools. He won the competition for lawyer-linguist at the Court of Justice of the European Union and the admission competition for the PhD in European Union Law at the University of Bologna.

Following a competitive examination, he entered the diplomatic career on 18 May 1993.

Between May 1993 and August 1996, he served at Office VII of the Directorate General (D.G.) for Cultural Relations (Multilateral Scientific Cooperation and Antarctic Treaty) and at Office VI of the D.G. for Economic Affairs (Economic relations with former USSR countries).

From September 1996 to October 1999, he was Second Secretary, then First Secretary (and Deputy Head of Mission until February 1999) at the Embassy of Italy in Kyiv.

From November 1999, he served as First Secretary at the Embassy of Italy in The Hague.

Promoted to Counselor in July 2003, he concluded his service at the Embassy of Italy in The Hague as Counselor in January 2004.

From February 2004 to January 2005, he was Deputy Head of Office V of the D.G. for Personnel (Competitions and Italian candidacies to International Organisations).

From January 2005 to August 2006, he served as Head of Office V of the D.G. for Personnel.

From September 2006, he was Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Warsaw.

Promoted to Embassy Counselor in July 2008, he concluded his service at the Embassy of Italy in Warsaw as First Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission in August 2010.

From September 2010 to January 2015, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

From February to October 2015, he was Head of Office IV of the D.G. for the European Union (EU Institutional and Legal Affairs).

From November 2015 to October 2016, he served as Head of Office I of the D.G. for the European Union (EU Economic, Financial, and Sectoral Policies).

From October 2016, he was Head of the Adriatic and Balkans Unit.

Promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary in January 2017, he concluded his service as Head of the Adriatic and Balkans Unit in September 2019.

From October 2019 to October 2022, he was Head of the Secretariat of the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni.

From November to December 2022, he served as Head of the Secretariat of the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Edmondo Cirielli.

From January 2023, he served directly under the Head of Diplomatic Protocol.

From July 2023, he served directly under the Director General for Political and Security Affairs as Coordinator for United Nations Reform.

On 4 March 2024, he assumed the post of Ambassador of Italy to the Republic of Slovenia.
